Introduction to Industrial Engineering

Introduction to Industrial Engineering - Course at NITIE

http://knol.google.com/k/narayana-rao-k-v-s-s/introduction-to-industrial-engineering/2utb2lsm2k7a/2105#

This knol provides a focused view to industrial engineering.

Within the management discipline, there are various functional management areas. The management of functions where the technical skill is engineering is termed as engineering management. Industrial engineering is a functional area in business organizations where the primary technical skill is engineering. Industrial engineering is human effort engineering and system efficiency engineering.

Managers have to take care of effectiveness and efficiency. Effectiveness is deciding the right thing to do. Managers have to understand the customers' needs and wants and decide on the right products and right quantities to make. Then they have to interact with customers on a continuous basis and provide them the required service. Making operations efficient is another activity. Industrial engineers support managers in human effort engineering and making systems efficient.

The knol is now further enhanced by indicating the relevant chapters from Maynard's handbook and knols for each topic of the syllabus.

Precautions When Using Computers for Long Periods

ERGONOMICS AT VISUAL DISPLAY TERMINALS
WORKSTATION AND POSTURE DURING VDT USE, VISION AND LIGHTING, GENERAL GUIDELINES, WORK ENVIRONMENT

http://knol.google.com/k/rauf-iqbal/ergonomics-at-visual-display-terminals/74wllt8z4n5y/7#

Main Point made in the knol

The concept of ergonomics is not only confined to the shop floor of an industry, it has also occupied its space in the office premises as Office Ergonomics. One part of Office Ergonomics is Visual Display Terminal (VDT) ergonomics. VDT comprises of computer and its workstation, which includes positioning of the computer, working posture at the computer as well as the workstation for computer, like computer table, chair, accessories and work environment etc (ISO, 1998). People whose occupations involve spending prolonged period of time at the computer workstation are subjected to stresses that may lead to painful, debilitating conditions (Saito, 1996; Swoboda, 1992). The resulting stress may cause higher levels of fatigue and tension during the day. Prolonged exposure to a non-ergonomic working environment may lead to the development of Cumulative Trauma disorders, or CTD’S (Saito, 1996; Laville, 1980). Cumulative Trauma disorders or CTD’S are a class of injuries that arise from putting excessive pressure on the body to perform over a period of time.

Various suggestions are given in the knol to avoid problems.

System Engineering Process and Its Management

http://knol.google.com/k/narayana-rao-kvss/-/2utb2lsm2k7a/1206#view

Can industrial engineers design systems internally in IE departments. They may not be able to design any complex system without the involvement of technical pesonnel belonging to the area of technology or management. But they can take the role of management of system design.

This explores the topic of management of system design through summarizing the book, James Martin, Systems Engineering Guidebook, CRC Press, Boca Raton, Florida, USA , 1996. The knol at the moment has introduction to the topic.

The Concept of Human Effort Engineering: HR Dimension

http://knol.google.com/k/narayana-rao-kvss/the-concept-of-human-effort-engineering/2utb2lsm2k7a/1156#

A new definition of industrial engineering emerged in the literature. “Industrial Engineering is Human Effort Engineering. It is an engineering discipline that deals with the design of human effort in all occupations: agricultural, manufacturing and service. The objectives of Industrial Engineering are optimization of productivity of work-systems and occupational comfort, health, safety and income of persons involved.” According to this definition the two focus areas of industrial engineering are human effort engineering and systems efficiency/productivity engineering.

The activities of human resource management can be categorized under the five major domains: Organizational design, Staffing, Performance management and appraisal, Employee and organizational development, and reward systems, benefits, and compliance. Traditionally Industrial engineering and human resource management had interconnected relationships in areas like manpower planning and job design. The new definition increases the scope of interaction between IE department and HRM department.

Industrial Engineering

Definition, Explantion, History, and Programs

http://knol.google.com/k/narayana-rao-kvss/industrial-engineering/2utb2lsm2k7a/1151#

"Industrial Engineering is Human Effort Engineering and System Efficiency Engineeering."

Industrial engineering can be better explained with the statement that the two focus areas of industrial engineering are human effort engineering and system efficiency engineering.

The explanation of industrial engineering as human effort engineering and system efficiency engineering brings out more clearly the scope of the IIE definition that industrial engineering is concerned with the design, improvement, and installation of integrated systems. The word engineering is associated with design and production, fabrication or construction according to designs. As explained above, system design in entirety cannot be the sole preserve of industrial engineers. The functional design production systems in various branches of engineering can be done by engineers of that branch only. Similarly functional design of various management systems in a business organization can be done by managers of that function only. Industrial engineers have a role to play in systems design and it is of designing efficiency into the functional systems designed by others.

Fundamentals of Industrial Engineering

http://knol.google.com/k/narayana-rao-kvss/-/2utb2lsm2k7a/1116#

Review of the Chapter 1.5 Fundamentals of Industrial Engineering in Maynard's Handbook of Industrial Enginering, 5th Edition.

Industrial engineering has to focus on two areas as its specialty – Human effort engineering and System efficiency engineering. By inserting the term efficiency and writing the first area as OPERATIONS EFFICIENY ANALYSIS AND DESIGN will be make it more clear to the practitioners as well as users the role of industrial engineers. Work measurement is an exclusive area of industrial engineering and we need to recognize that in methods engineering once again functional engineering of the method belongs to production engineers and only human effort and efficiency engineering are the areas of industrial engineering. Ergonomics is the science used by industrial engineering in human effort engineering.

Six Sigma

Six Sigma is a business management strategy, originally developed by Motorola, that today enjoys wide-spread application in many sectors of industry.

Six Sigma seeks to identify and remove the causes of defects and errors in manufacturing and business processes. It uses a set of quality management methods, including statistical methods, and creates a special infrastructure of people within the organization ("Black Belts" etc.) who are experts in these methods. Each Six Sigma project carried out within an organization follows a defined sequence of steps and has quantified financial targets (cost reduction or profit increase).

Focus of Industrial Engineering

Industrial engineers have to focus on human efficiency and system efficiency in the design of integrated systems and they can look for a leadership role in the systems design due to their broad learning curriculum.
