Precautions When Using Computers for Long Periods

Main Point made in the knol

The concept of ergonomics is not only confined to the shop floor of an industry, it has also occupied its space in the office premises as Office Ergonomics. One part of Office Ergonomics is Visual Display Terminal (VDT) ergonomics. VDT comprises of computer and its workstation, which includes positioning of the computer, working posture at the computer as well as the workstation for computer, like computer table, chair, accessories and work environment etc (ISO, 1998). People whose occupations involve spending prolonged period of time at the computer workstation are subjected to stresses that may lead to painful, debilitating conditions (Saito, 1996; Swoboda, 1992). The resulting stress may cause higher levels of fatigue and tension during the day. Prolonged exposure to a non-ergonomic working environment may lead to the development of Cumulative Trauma disorders, or CTD’S (Saito, 1996; Laville, 1980). Cumulative Trauma disorders or CTD’S are a class of injuries that arise from putting excessive pressure on the body to perform over a period of time.

Various suggestions are given in the knol to avoid problems.

Capitalist Morality versus Socialist Morality

According to Yevgeny Bugaev's book, the essence of capitalist morality is individualism, careerism, worship of the monied and contempt for penniless. Some of the moral principles of capitalist societies are, “If you do not want to be a slave, try to become a slave-owner”, “dog eat dog”, and “each for himself”. Capitalism cripples people morally and humiliates their dignity.

Socialists or communists promote moral views which express the interests and ideals of all working humankind. Socialists believe that working man’s nature is originally devoid of loafer, mercenary, and hooligan instincts.

Spiritual Practices of Sri Rama Krishna Paramahamsa

The path recommended by Swamiji is External Worship, Japam (Recitation of a Mantra), Meditation (Thinking deeply about God in solitude) and Samadhi.

The practitioner (termed sadhaka) has to perform spiritual practices for number of years to develop his mind spiritually. A spiritually mind only can realise the vision of a God. When will it take place? It is the mercy of God. But God will certainly show his mercy if a person desires it sincerely.

The Concept of Human Effort Engineering: HR Dimension

A new definition of industrial engineering emerged in the literature. “Industrial Engineering is Human Effort Engineering. It is an engineering discipline that deals with the design of human effort in all occupations: agricultural, manufacturing and service. The objectives of Industrial Engineering are optimization of productivity of work-systems and occupational comfort, health, safety and income of persons involved.” According to this definition the two focus areas of industrial engineering are human effort engineering and systems efficiency/productivity engineering.

The activities of human resource management can be categorized under the five major domains: Organizational design, Staffing, Performance management and appraisal, Employee and organizational development, and reward systems, benefits, and compliance. Traditionally Industrial engineering and human resource management had interconnected relationships in areas like manpower planning and job design. The new definition increases the scope of interaction between IE department and HRM department.

Industrial Engineering

Definition, Explantion, History, and Programs

"Industrial Engineering is Human Effort Engineering and System Efficiency Engineeering."

Industrial engineering can be better explained with the statement that the two focus areas of industrial engineering are human effort engineering and system efficiency engineering.

The explanation of industrial engineering as human effort engineering and system efficiency engineering brings out more clearly the scope of the IIE definition that industrial engineering is concerned with the design, improvement, and installation of integrated systems. The word engineering is associated with design and production, fabrication or construction according to designs. As explained above, system design in entirety cannot be the sole preserve of industrial engineers. The functional design production systems in various branches of engineering can be done by engineers of that branch only. Similarly functional design of various management systems in a business organization can be done by managers of that function only. Industrial engineers have a role to play in systems design and it is of designing efficiency into the functional systems designed by others.

Jimmy Wales on Knol - February 2009

How seriously do you take Knol as a rival?

Jimmy Wales: I don't think Knol is a competitor at all. Knol is nothing like Wikipedia and doesn't have the potential to become anything like Wikipedia.

The very design of the site is really more of a blogging platform. They say very explicitly that they want people to post their own opinions and have more of a quirky commentary style. They have no editorial structure the way that we do to push for quality.

In an interview with DW-WORLD
Published on 05.02.2009,,4002653,00.html

I am sure many active knollers disagree with Jimmy Wales.

Many professors and faculty members are joining knol and I do not think Jimmy Wales or any other person has any reason to declare them as persons not competent to develop articles in their area of specialisation.

Fundamentals of Industrial Engineering

Review of the Chapter 1.5 Fundamentals of Industrial Engineering in Maynard's Handbook of Industrial Enginering, 5th Edition.

Industrial engineering has to focus on two areas as its specialty – Human effort engineering and System efficiency engineering. By inserting the term efficiency and writing the first area as OPERATIONS EFFICIENY ANALYSIS AND DESIGN will be make it more clear to the practitioners as well as users the role of industrial engineers. Work measurement is an exclusive area of industrial engineering and we need to recognize that in methods engineering once again functional engineering of the method belongs to production engineers and only human effort and efficiency engineering are the areas of industrial engineering. Ergonomics is the science used by industrial engineering in human effort engineering.

Origin of the Earth's Magnetic Field

Since 1939, the geomagnetic field has been thought to arise from a dynamo mechanism, though not in Earth's fluid core as long believed, but in the fission-product sub-shell of the georeactor, a naturally occurring nuclear fission reactor thought to exist at the center of the Earth. This is the reason.

Improving Emotional Intelligence of Stock Traders and Stock Dealers

Many behavioral finance research papers have documented the emotional biases exhibited by professionals in the finance field. This calls for developing a training module to improve the emotional intelligence of stock traders and stock dealers.

Most professional stock traders have a very good grounding in the economic factors involved in trading stocks. Less or no attention is given to the fact that human beings are emotional beings and that emotional intelligence is a factor in most trades especially as many a times stock trading is a herd mentality. We will explain in this knol the science of developing our emotional intelligence strategies in relation to trading stocks.

Best Engineering Practices For Real Time Field Deployable Systems

Best engineering practices are a set of rules or guidelines used when engineering complex systems. In the field of real-time systems, particularly those deployed in remote or hostile environments, it is often challenging to debug software in the field. Software in this scenario often encounters significant errors in the hardware it runs on. For example, bits in memory (particularly flash memory) are often randomly corrupted and unrecoverable. Interactions between bad hardware and bad software pose significant challenges to debug, correct and obtain proper functionality without replacing physical modules.

Future of Journalists, Authors and Writers in Digital Economy

Professionals have to figure out where the market failure is in the amateur internet and do something that still has value and which people will pay for, either directly or in terms of their attention which can be monetised through advertising.

Media professionals have to figure out how they can do something that adds value to the internet, that people will pay for, and that still costs less than the income that is derived from it. That is the job, that's business in the new competitive digital information marketplace.

5,000,000 (5 million) page views for a Knol Author in year

I am thinking I can plan for 1000 knols each having 5000 page views in the year. That will give 5,000,000 page views in year. 5 million, right. I think it is possible. 100,000 page views in a week.

Many other knollers will achieve similar targets and knol platform will move away from the worries of the survival of the platform in 2009-10.

I think knol admin should release knol page view and other statistics for the entire platform on daily basis or weekly basis. Some of the statistics can be:

Daily page views
Cumulative page views
Daily authors registered
Cumulative number of authors registered
Daily knols created
Cumulative number of knols created
Average page views per week for a knol badge quality knol
Average page views per week for a five star quality knol
Average page views per week for a four star quality knol
Average page views per week for a three star quality knol
Average page views per week for a two star quality knol
Average page views per week for a one star quality knol
Average page views per week for an unstarred knol
Average page views for an author
Average page views for an active author

Such a score card can give excitement, information and enables planning by knol writers.

One more of my suggestion is that blog search engine of google should search knol also along with blogs. Blogs are user generated content and knols are also user generated content on a different platform. Hence it makes sense for blog search engine to search knols also.
